Tips to Help Your Commercial Real Estate Career During Quarantine

As the Covid-19 Coronavirus pandemic sweeps the nation and the wider world, many have found themselves stuck indoors under self-imposed, or even government sanctioned quarantine. As the market prices drop, businesses close, and services come to a stop, many people have found themselves without work and worried about what the future holds for them in terms of financial stability.

Although this may seem like a precarious time for your personal finances, it is crucial, now more than ever, to make wise career decisions to ensure you weather the storm that Covid-19 has brought us.

Commercial Real Estate is an extremely stable and mature industry. As values start to fluctuate, now is a perfect time to invest in intelligent commercial real estate decisions.

What actions can you take immediately to put yourself in a better position during this downtime?

Research While You Can – While you are stuck indoors with the quarantine, now is the perfect time to read all you can get your hands on to further your knowledge of the commercial real estate industry. Warren Buffet himself states he spends over 6 hours reading each day, and that's without a global pandemic occurring around him. There is some value in researching all that you can to get an advantage in your career by making well-educated decisions. Real Estate investors and developers have written books that can help you navigate starting up and avoid some pitfalls as you advance.

Expand Your Network – With the whole world stuck indoors, the internet has never been as active. With many people turning to social media and movie streaming to fill their hours, you must spend your time online in a more productive way. Building a network of like-minded individuals who may be able to share some of their valuable knowledge with you is an excellent use of your free time during the quarantine. Instagram and LinkedIn are full of amazing people who are more than happy to help out their fellow professionals, especially in such difficult times. Also if you can, join CRE focused social and trade organizations. Many of these organizations host weekly webinars and classes that will help you connect with professionals at your level and further up the food chain.

Online Education – There are many online courses centered around the commercial real estate industry, which you can complete while working from home. Although the internet is awash with some poor quality and excessively expensive programs, there are some excellent resources available out there for those looking to enhance their commercial real estate investment skills. There are multiple courses available online, both credited and uncredited, which can be used to further your knowledge of the commercial real estate industry. Many accredited Universities have moved their finance, real estate programs and certificates online which becomes a great opportunity to get a solid branded education.

Work on Your Communication Skills – With all the extra time you may have to interact with friends or family, now is a great time to brush up on some of the more technical aspects of communication. ZOOM calls and Facetime will be an integral aspect of the commercial real estate game going forward. This is an ample opportunity to polish up your presentation techniques and speaking by getting involved in webinars, starting a YouTube channel or hosting calls with other real estate professionals.

Quarantine sucks, but it is a huge opportunity to make strides and gain traction in your commercial real estate career. Take the opportunity to leverage the free moments during this challenging time to get ahead.
